Mythology calls it the day Lord Brahma commenced all creation. A new Yuga signifying new beginnings. Celebrated with much festivity and excitement in the South of India, that is Ugadi for you. Ugadi is also called Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra. The day marks the start of the New Year, when Aries (the first sign of the zodiac), Vasantha Rithu (Spring season), Chaitra Masam (first lunar month), Sukla Paksha (first fortnight) and Prathama Thithi (first lunar day) or ‘Chandramana’ coincide. The day is therefore a culmination of firsts, and signifies the end of the old and the start of the new.

The sun holds a special significance in Ugadi. A man is non-existent without his soul, and so is life without the sun. Carrying the sun motif in jewellery and clothing is particularly significant. Traditionally, Ugadi is a day to immerse oneself in the Ganges as a mark of spiritual cleansing, and chanting prayers invoking the Goddess. It is a day to enjoy Bevu Bella, a 6-ingredient food that celebrates 6 main human emotions. It is a day spent gathering together and reading the Panchangas and forecasts for the coming year. It was to these gatherings that people wore some of their finest jewellery and clothing, hoping to start this auspiciously by invoking the Divine.

In India, tradition is woven into everything we wear and carry. Auspicious jewellery that carries symbols like mango leaves or the sun, crafted by the work of human hands, inedibly etched into the mind of the Kaarigar, and perfected through the centuries, helps us keep our divinity and traditions alive.
